WORKSHOPS

PAINTING SKY AND WATER FABRICS (One day class) In a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, students will spend the day painting skies and waters: blue summer skies, sunsets, oceans, waterfalls etc. with an emphasis on becoming familiar with non-toxic transparent permanent textile paints, mixing, and applying the paints to cotton fabric for use in quilts. Students generally complete about 2 - 4 yards of fabric. The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for future exploration in hand-coloring fabric.

Suitable for all levels and particularly good for students who have little or no experience with fabric paints.
Lab fee: $12. for paints and some other materials

PLAYING WITH PAINTS ON FABRIC (One day class) In a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, students will spend the day becoming familiar with non-toxic transparent permanent textile paints, mixing, and applying the paints to cotton fabric for use in quilts. Students will paint sun-prints, leaf prints, create wonderful textures, garden fabrics, etc. and generally complete about 2 - 4 yards of fabric. The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for future exploration in hand-coloring fabric.

Suitable for all levels.
Lab fee: $12. for use of paints in class and some other materials.

PAINTING LANDSCAPE FABRICS (Two day class)
In a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, this class is an introduction for the non-painter to the use of non-toxic transparent permanent textile paints on cotton fabric suitable for quilts. Students will spend the first day becoming familiar with the various effects that the watercolor paints produce when diluted to certain degrees and when applied with brushes, sponges, and bottles. During this time, students will also experiment with mixing colors, manipulating fabric, and painting many special effects pieces for blue skies, sunsets, water, leaves, earth, and others.

The second day gives students the opportunity to develop more sophisticated color combinations through a concentration on mixing colors, as well as creating individual painted landscapes and several other landscape techniques for interesting results. Students generally complete about 3 - 6 yards of fabric pieces if weather is good and they are able to dry fabric outdoors. The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for future exploration in hand-coloring fabric.

Suitable for all levels and particularly good for students who have little or no experience with fabric paints.
Lab fee: $25. per person for use of paints in class and some other materials.

THE SKYSCAPE QUILT - (2 day class) In a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, students (even non-painters!) are instructed in the use of non-toxic permanent textile paints on cotton fabric suitable for quilts. Students generally complete about 3 yards of fabric pieces during the first day if weather is good and they are able to dry fabric outdoors.
The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and will be incorporated into students’ wall quilts highlighting large sections of sky and foreground with a pieced design focus.

THE FIRST DAY students will paint skies, water, and foreground for a “cottage” or “mountain” quilt design. During this time, students will also experiment with mixing colors, manipulating fabric, and painting special effects.

THE SECOND DAY students will work on a “Skyscape” quilt design. Design elements will be provided, and students then will select, and cut (yes, CUT!) their painted fabrics. There will be instruction and emphasis on fabric and design choices to convey “mood” and a “sense of place”.

Knowledge of piecing quilts is absolutely necessary.
Materials fee: $25. per person for use of paints, pattern, and several other materials.

PAINTS ON FABRIC (Three - five day class)
In a relaxed atmosphere of warmth and good humor, students will spend approximately two and a half days of the class involved in a comprehensive approach to non-toxic, water-based transparent fabric paints with the emphasis on becoming familiar with the properties of the paints, applying paints to fabric using a variety of implements, color mixing, and creating the effects of nature for use in quilts. Landscape components and actual individual landscape paintings will be created by the students.
Beginning during the third day, students are introduced to other innovative techniques such as combining opaque and transparent paints, painting with air-brush inks, overlays, monoprinting from fabric, etc. Students generally complete 10 -15 yards of fabric pieces especially if weather is good and they can dry fabric outdoors. The designs produced are a combination of planning and serendipity and give the students a hands-on basis for future exploration in hand-coloring fabric.

Suitable for all levels.
Lab fee: $30. - $45. per person, depending on class length, for use of paints in class and some other materials.
